Don’t Be Afraid to Get Help!

We are all so busy in our everyday lives!  We all have unique circumstances that require attention whether it be dogs, cats, kids, husbands/wives, parents, sisters, brothers, work, business, home, apartment, grandparents, friends, projects, and the list goes on.  We don’t have to own our own business to know that sometimes we just need help!  Are there certain activities that you absolutely HATE to do?  Something that you would hire out if you could?  Then do it!

I think some of us feel bad if we hire out work.  Doesn’t that mean we can’t handle it ourselves?  NO!  I want you to stop thinking that way.  For so many of us we try to be superman/superwoman, and sometimes it just doesn’t work.  What I have been realizing this past week or so is that I would rather NOT be superwoman to my family and be able to spend more time with them.

I know this might be a foreign thought to some of us, and some of us enjoy everything we do around the house or in our business.  That is great!  As long as it isn’t taking away from other important things in life.  If you do everything for your family and still have time for yourself and for quality time with your family, then keep doing what you are doing… and by the way, can we talk sometime? LOL!

What I want you to do is think of the one thing in your life that you would hire out if you could?  Now, I want you to do it!  That is right… I want you to take the steps, and hire it out!  There are so many great places to get help.  If your help doesn’t require being at your home, then there are a lot of places to get virtual assistants for everything you might need.  One of my favorite places is O’Desk, but you could go to Elance as well.

You can post a job you want done and have people apply, or you could look for someone you would like to hire based on their qualifications.  Either way, there are some great people who can help you do what you need to get done for a decent price!  You don’t have to own your own business to get an assistant!  Think about how much money your time is worth.  If you think about it, why would you spend 2 hours trying to research how to do a specific project online when you could hire an assistant who knows what they are doing?

If what you need help with is at your home, then find a reputable company to do the work for you.  You might have to be there while the work is being done in order to oversee it, but you could be working on other things at that time!  If you are short on cash, then try to come up with creative ways to find help!  Instead of hiring a company to mow your yard, find a neighborhood kid who will do it for cheaper.  Not only is your lawn getting mowed, but you are also helping a child learn entrepreneurship and how to manage his/her money!

If that even seems like a stretch for you at this point, then set a goal, and once you make a certain amount of money, start hiring out the chore you hate doing the most.  For me, I love doing the laundry.  That is something I will never give up:)  But the cleaning on the other hand is a different story.  I absolute hate wasting my time cleaning.

If you are nervous with starting with a virtual assistant (like I was), just try someone out for a small project you need done.  Chances are if you hired a good worker, then you will quickly realize how much time, energy, and even money they will save you!  Yes… I said money!!  When I first hired my virtual assistant, I was nervous.  I soon realized that what it took me sometimes 2 hours to complete it only took her 30 minutes!! That is 1.5 hours saved, and I only had to pay her 30 minutes of her time.  It is a win-win for everyone:)

It Could Be Worse

Sometimes life gives you gifts, and sometimes it gives you lemons.  Only you can choose what you let make or ruin your life. Short of ending your life, there is never any one decision you can make to ruin it. So don’t let anyone else determine your happiness or success. I wanted to encourage you today to rise above your circumstances and create the life you want with what you have been given.

I don’t have a big home, by any means. And it’s not beautifully decorated. But it’s nice and easy to clean. I dream of a nicer home one day, but I’m going to enjoy every second I have in this one.  We should appreciate what has been given to us, because everything we have is a gift and let’s be honest, it could be worse! Let’s try to move past the woe is me mindset and complaining attitudes and move towards being pleasant and trying to focus on the good.

Sometimes it’s hard to see the good, especially in a time of need. If this is true for you or you just seem unhappy with your life, try making a list of one thing each day that was good or you were grateful for. You can call it your gratitude journal or list, but whatever you call it, it is a visual representation of the good in your life. Cling to it. Focus on it. You will become a more optimistic, positive, and peaceful person as time goes on. Today I am grateful for the night off to write. What are you grateful for today?

Encouraging Others

Encouragement.

For some reason in our society we have gotten away from encouraging others.  We judge others and sometimes are harsh to them without even realizing it.

I was listening to a podcast yesterday where she was talking about how people in your life should challenge you on decisions and try to make sure you are making the best decisions possible.  While I do believe you need people in your life to tell it like it is sometimes, I do believe we need encouragement more.

It took awhile for me to pursue my dreams and leave my steady career that I had grown accustomed to.  I had people in my life supporting me and telling me to chase those dreams, and it still took me awhile to start on that journey.  I wonder what would have happened if I didn’t have anyone in my life who encouraged me to be the person I dreamed of being.  Instead it could have been easier for them to tell me that I wouldn’t make it, and I needed to stay with a steady job that I knew was the safe option.

It was definitely the option that was guaranteed to work since I was already in that position and creating a good life from that job.  Most people would have been happy in the career path that I went into, but there was something missing in it for me.  I just kept feeling like there was something else out there for me.

If I wouldn’t have had my support group in place when I got started on my journey of being an entrepreneur, I probably wouldn’t be in the place I am today.  I definitely did not pick the easy choice, but I picked the choice that makes me feel like I am doing what I was designed to do.  I still feel frustrated, beaten down, and even like I am failing sometimes.  The difference now is that I keep doing it because I love doing what I do.  The positives outweigh the negatives, and I love being able to create the life I have always wanted.

For you it might be something different that you need encouragement on, but every one of us needs it in some way!  Do you remember the last time you encouraged someone?  Do you remember the last time someone encouraged you?  If you don’t have anyone in your life that you feel encourages you to be the person you want to be then find some people that do!  Join communities of people that will be that support system for you.  Your local church, meetup.com, and joining a local gym could all provide opportunities to meet these people.  There are probably some great people who you work with that would be great friends if you just opened yourself up!

People want to be around people that inspire them and believe in them!  We need to start being positive towards those people in our lives that mean the most to us.  If you can’t remember the last time you encouraged a friend or family member, I challenge you to pick up the phone and either call or text some sort of encouragement to someone who you know needs it.

The other day I had a friend who felt bad about her success so far in life and was trying to justify why they were building a home with so much space.  I looked at her and said, “You have worked hard to get where you are in life today.  You don’t have to justify it to me!”

She had other family members around her that weren’t as happy for her and were jealous.  Instead of encouraging her and genuinely being happy for her, they were criticizing her need for space in the home, and making rude comments under their breath.  This is no way to treat people, and it has got to stop!

I am not perfect in encouraging others, but I am trying everyday to be better.

God has given us all a purpose and a plan in our life.  Everyone’s life looks different, but who are we to judge what someone else’s life should look like?  I don’t think if we see someone we love go down a bad path that we shouldn’t speak up and say something, but if we do and the behavior still does not change, then all we can do at that point is pray and encourage them.  People will respond better to love than someone trying to change them.

Your digital life consists of all the pictures, documents, information, and whatever else is stored on your phone, your computer, or in the “cloud”. Most people’s are a mess; they didn’t realize they needed an organizational system until it was too late. They now have 12,000 pictures across two different computers and even more on phones and tablets.  They have a few hundred documents from work or school on their computers and a very primitive backup system, if any.  This is most people. If you aren’t this bad and you managed to get some control over your digital life, good for you! Give yourself a pat on the back, but keep reading because this could still help you.
If you run a business, are in school, or are very digitally active, cloud storage would be very beneficial for you. Whether or not you know it or agree, we are transitioning into the age of “The Cloud”.  The cloud is a buzzword that basically means you upload your information to the internet and the service you are using stores that information for you.  To sum it up further, whatever information you put in “the cloud” is stored on the internet.  However you want to say it, it gives you a bit more freedom and frees up your hard drive space.  For example, depending on what service you use, those hundreds of documents you have could be available on your smartphone, your tablet, or your other various computers.
Don’t freak out! It used to be hard, but it’s becoming so simple that I recommend it to anyone.  If your a PC lover then Microsoft has a new program suite called Microsoft 365 that is a great option.  It’s 99.99 a year, but you get access to their programs as well as a terabyte of storage in the cloud. That’s a great deal! If your an Apple person, don’t worry.  Apple is rolling out a similar service this fall and until then, you can store your iSuite files as well as many pictures and other things in their iCloud.
I am telling you all this because I truly think it is the best option for digital management. As long as you keep your devices with access locked, then it is a great tool and it’s super easy to use.  All your data available at any time makes waiting in the doctors office an opportunity to get some work done. Or a phone call more productive because you can address the issue at that moment instead of waiting to “get back to the office”.  But the cloud isn’t for everyone.
If you typically use one computer and store all your information there, without needing to access it often, then cloud storage may not be for you, but look into it. It’s your decision that is based on your individual needs.
Ok, so on to actual organization!  Most people’s digital lives are separated into two categories, maybe three. Personal, work, and one other maybe school, blog, etc.  I look at digital storage as a pyramid. At the top are folders for broad categories that break down until every file has a place and folder to go.  This digital organization will be different for everyone. I have top files for home, each of my businesses, and one for sharing.  In home it is broken down by pictures, videos, and documents.  Pictures and videos are broken down by dates and documents are broken into past tax information, current tax information, important documents, house, cars, etc. you see where I am going.  It’s like a storage cabinet but digital.  Once you have the folders in place you can start to move your files.
Try to simplify and get rid of things. You don’t need tax information from 1970, so pitch it. If your are concerned because your stuff isn’t digital, don’t be. Just make it digital. Spend a day converting your life to the digital world. I did this two years ago and am thrilled with the results. It’s easier to find information and files and I am more productive having the information available to me at all times.

Odd Ways to Simplify Your Life

I know we have talked about simplicity before, but I never went in depth about some things that can really help you maintain a simpler, easier life. There are several ways you can go about this and many of these techniques can be transferred to other areas of your life. For example, one of the ways I have been trying to simplify my life is by unsubscribing from all junk emails. But the same could be applied to junk mail as well. It’s a waste for me to receive countless marketing ads when I don’t buy anything. It’s also a waste of time to sort through all this mail and delete the emails or recycle the actual mail. I can get up to 200 emails a day and most are junk. This advice isn’t just for people who have too little time in their day. So find that unsubscribe at the bottom of your emails and go to town! Or call the number listed on the magazines or circulars to get your name taken off the list. Ok so let’s simplify this so you don’t have to read as much!
1.Stop junk emails at the source and unsubscribe!
2.Stop junk mail at the source and end subscriptions.
3.Get rid of excess clothing that is not allowing you to see what you really have to wear.
4.Plan out your meals in advance and buy ingredients for that specific meal. Don’t try to throw things together at the last minute.
5.Touch things once. This means, don’t stack things up in piles to be dealt with later. If it’s in your hand, put it where it belongs, not on the kitchen counter. ( I know this is hard, but it will make a difference, trust me).
6.Get rid of apps on your phone you don’t use! Try this: move all your applications but one to the second or third screen on your phone. As you use an app, move it to the first. After a month, delete the apps you haven’t used.
7.Plan and make to do lists in one place. I have seen women who have three calendars and four places where they keep their to do or to get lists. Simplify. I recommend Erin Condren life planners. 8.If you have to drive somewhere, try to plan other stops that coincide. I learned this from serving my way through college. If your going someplace anyways, why not make the trip count and get other things done as well. For example, if I am dropping my hubby off at the airport I will oftentimes stop by Costco on the way there or on the way home. It’s about a 20 minute drive there and so I will plan in advance and make the trip once, accomplishing two tasks. Seems simple, but it can save a lot of time.
9.Have less stuff! This one is just as it sounds. I know I keep going over this, but when you have a ton of things in your life, you spend a lot of time organizing, fixing, and taking care of them. Ok, I am done, but seriously, try to get rid of some of it.
10.I am guilty of having several email addresses. I am in the process of simplifying it down to one. My bad, but seriously, keep it simple if you can help it.
11.Keep your digital life simple. Keep your files in one place and make sure everything is properly backed up. I can’t imagine how I would find anything without dropbox and my organization system in it.

We liked this book because not only does it give you business advice, but it also gives you advice in general about how you can grow rich.  It talks a lot about the power of positive thinking.  It wasn’t until this book that I realized how powerful thoughts are.  It is a great book to help you retrain your brain into thinking more positively, and it gives you some great practices to start incorporating into your business today!

The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich (Expanded and Updated)

Now we know most of you are thinking, “There is absolutely NO way this can happen,” and “It isn’t worth my time.”  That is what we thought the first time we read the title too.  What we didn’t realize though is how much quality information this book has to offer!  After reading this book you probably won’t be only working 4 hour weeks, but we guarantee that you will either be able to start working less or be more productive throughout your day.  Tim Ferris not only gives you tips about how to create a business for yourself, but he also shares how we can cut time and energy from doing the things we are so used to doing every single day.  We highly recommend this book (even if you don’t have your own business)!

EntreLeadership: 20 Years of Practical Business Wisdom from the Trenches

Not only do we love this book for the wise business advice that it gives, but we also loved listening to Dave Ramsey read the audio version.  He has such a great southern accent and makes listening to his books fun!  We liked this book for the fact that he goes over how a business owner needs to think and act.  It also gives insight into how to treat employees.  He is such a wise man, and has some great tips for hardships that come up in any business.  He talks about hiring/firing employees, how to treat them, and much more!

We hope you enjoy these books as much as we have!  They each offer something unique to the reader.  That is why we went with these three books because we feel like they each hit on a different topic in business.  They will help expand your thinking and help you to take action into making your dreams come true.  Whatever they may be!

Hi!

I wanted to check in to see how we were doing with the summer challenge!  I know it has made a difference my life greatly!  To see the impact it is creating is a wonderful feeling!

For those of you who are new to this summer challenge here is a recap:

It is so easy to stay in our bubble and not worry about other people’s situations, and it is sometimes easy to look down on them. I think we need to change our perspective a little bit by encouraging one another. What better day to start this challenge than on a Monday!

The challenge is every Monday to encourage someone who you think needs it. It can be a co-worker, friend, family member, kid, or even a stranger you meet in the street. Our world is hurting, and we need to take the time to make it a better place.

It will also help us to look outside of ourselves and focus on other peoples’ needs. I love the idea of “Monday Motivation” which is what inspired me to start this challenge. The encouragement could be a note, thoughtful words, a present, a listening ear, or even just a hug. If you become in tune with people, then you will start to think of ways that could brighten their day. If for some reason you cannot think of any way to encourage them on your own, then there is a world wide web that has ideas on almost everything!
