Day seven of my fourteen day media fast where I don’t watch TV, listen to music, watch movies, stalk people on social media, or listen to the news.
I own and operate a few small businesses. All of which utilize free advertising via social media. This for me means I must respond and make posts in order to get more customers and subscribers. I have to say it’s hard, but not impossible to use Facebook as a tool and not get caught up in everyone else’s lives. One way that I make it work is to quickly exit out of the screen in which everyone’s updates and posts are located. Don’t even look because if you are like me, you will be drawn in, page after page. Instead determine a purpose before logging on, execute that purpose, then sign off. For me I mostly respond to comments or likes, post, or check if there are new likes, then I have to shut it down. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others can be time wasters, but they can also be unbelievable tools for business. We didn’t realize the impact on brand recognition with our first startup, but we are well aware and taking advantage now. If you don’t own or operate a business, a break may be more well-suited for your life. Either way, make social media work for you instead of waste your time.
