If you were able to take away all your doubts and preconceived notions about yourself, what would you do? Who would you want to be? Where would you like to be? If your life lacks movement and a forward motion then setting specific goals for your life will help you define what you want, and then we can talk about how you get there. I am the poster child for goal setting and achieving. I define what I want, develop a plan, and go get em! I will give specific examples later on, but it all starts with defining your dreams, goals, aspirations. If your unhappy, you can start by defining sources of unhappiness, or defining something that will increase your happiness. The goal of just being happier is not enough. It needs to be defined and something that can be achieved. Sticking with that example, maybe your job is the biggest source of discord in your life. You could set the goal of finding a new job or even ways you could work from home. Maybe more vacations would make it worth it, but you don’t have the $ right now. That’s ok, you know that traveling will make you happy, so set the goal! We will get to the specifics of execution later. I set personal, financial, and spiritual goals for every year, five years, and ten years. I know it seems silly, but I started a small company where I can work from home, bought a home, taken several vacations a year, and optimized my life, all in two years. (Insert shameless plug for www.LillianGrace.co) So having a goal to be thinner is wonderful, but it needs to be more specific. Start by determining how much you would like to loose. Then make specific goals about how you will do that. We can specifically talk about how in another post, but let’s say for this example all you have to do is walk for thirty minutes five times a week. So your dream is to be thin, and your going to do this by setting a goal to walk five times a week for thirty minutes. Not the type to actually follow through? Announce it to everyone. Yes, it is a bit sadistic, but it works. I have never ran more than two miles in my life, but when I announced to everyone I was going to run 6 in a 10k things got super real. Thinking about rubbing it in my hubby’s face got me through the grueling six miles. Haha! If the pressure from others is still not enough, get a partner in crime. Having an accountability partner in life helps you achieve things you never imagined. I wanted to start waking up earlier and knowing my mother could call at any moment and check to see if I was up was enough to help me crawl out of my warm bed each morning. So go ahead dream your booty off ! I will help you bring them down to earth and find ways to achieve them. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all could live the life we want, not the life we feel we have to?
Embarrassing? Maybe, but below I have included my goals for last year which I printed off and laminated on a giant 3 foot poster. I am still using it for this year since many of my goals are the same. If you have a question feel free to ask. It’s very personal to me, but this is an example of something anyone can do to help them stay focused and motivated. I like checking off the little boxes hehe.
